“NGHỆ REGION” IN THE GEOPOLITICAL TRANSFORMATION OF VIETNAM FROM THE LATE EIGHTEENTH TO THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY

Abstract
This article examines the position of Xứ Nghệ - Nghệ Region within the political space of Vietnam in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Moving beyond the conventional narrative of Nghệ An as a commandery, a province, or an administrative unit, the article situates the region within the broader and dynamic historical processes through which the S-shaped territory of Vietnam was constructed and unified. In this geopolitical transformation, Nghệ An occupied an important position across several major historical theatres, from the Trịnh-Nguyễn War, the Tây Sơn-Trịnh conflict, and the Tây Sơn-Qing confrontation to the Tây Sơn-Nguyễn struggle. From its reputation as a land of outstanding people and sacred geography to its roles in taxation, corvée labour, military recruitment, logistics, battlefields, civil service examinations, and administrative governance, Nghệ An became deeply involved in the formation of the emerging political structure of modern Vietnam.
