Abstract

Yosano Akiko (与謝野 晶子), real name Ho Sho (鳳志よう), born in December 7, 1878, died in May 29, 1942, was a Japanese poet, the initiator of a new poetry movement in Japanese literature. Her most famous collection of poems is her first collection Midaregami (Tangled Hair, 1901). Despite heavy criticism from literary critics, the collection was still widely distributed and attracted the attention of contemporary liberal thinkers. Midaregami inspired contemporary women, bringing passionate individualism into traditional Tanka poetry, creating a breakthrough image, opening a new direction for modern Japanese women's poetry, building the image of a lively, free, sexy and confident woman. Midaregami challenged the patriarchal values of Japanese society as well as the literary and cultural conventions of his time.
