Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this descriptive cross-sectional study is to assess the level of mothers’ knowledge about taking care of children under five years old with infectious diarrhea at the Department of Gastroenterology of National Children's Hospital in 2022 and to analyze a number of related factors. Methods: Data were collected from 100 mothers of pediatric patients with infectious diarrhea treated at the Department of Gastroenterology at the National Children's Hospital in 2022 during the period from March 30, 2022 to May 15, 2022. Results: While 59.0% of mothers had general knowledge about infectious diarrhea and treatment methods, 38.0% of those surveyed knew when it was necessary to take their children to a health facility for examination and treatment. Notably, 39.0% of the mothers participating in the survey claimed that they let their children take medicine prescribed by their doctors. Regarding the mothers’ knowledge about fluid resuscitation for children, 100% know about Oresol; 81% knew how to give Oresol to their children and 44% of mothers used cooled boiled water as an alternative solution when Oresol was not available. In terms of feeding their children when they had diarrhea, 71% of mothers claimed that they gave their children small meals throughout the day and 44% of mothers followed their usual diets Conclusion: Although mothers these days have better knowledge about diarrhea, it is still crucial to equip them with updated knowledge about factors causing diarrhea and interventions to prevent diarrhea in the hope of reducing cases of childhood diarrhea disease as well as preventing superinfections.
