Abstract

The concept of “Three Teachings integration” refers to the linkage and coordination of three different ideological systems to meet political and cultural needs within a specific social context. This phenomenon is common, persistent, and encompasses the ideological systems of the classical and medieval periods in East Asian Sinosphere countries. In Vietnam, the integration of the Three Teachings refers to the harmonization of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, while in Japan, it usually denotes the combination of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto. This phenomenon is clearly reflected in literary works such as Nihonreiki and Lĩnh Nam chích quái. Studying the Three Teachings not only affirms the possibility of “unity in diversity” - the harmonious, supportive, and complementary interaction among religious systems - but also contributes to a clearer understanding of the universal worldview and human philosophy in East Asian narrative literature.
