THE VILLAGE STRUCTURE SURROUNDING HUE IN THE XVII-XVIII CENTURIES THROUGH RESEARCH OF ON-SITE MATERIALS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Since Doi Moi, foreign researchers have conducted field investigations in the country to collect documents and do research on the pre-modern history of Vietnam and have made some great research achievements. In particular, Japanese researchers on Vietnamese
history have been actively collecting pre-modern village documents and local historical documents. As a result, since 2000, research on Vietnamese history has undergone significant changes with the publication of studies using these new historical documents. However, in Vietnam, research for a new picture of pre-modern society using these new historical materials has not yet been developed. The biggest reason for this is Vietnamese intellectuals have not been able to relativize traditional cultural features. In other words, due to the tendency to regard these "traditional cultures" as non-historical entities and to
absolutize the ubiquitous presence in Vietnamese society at all times, efforts to clarify the process of historical formation through the analysis of historical documents have not been promoted. Using historical research methods, area studies methods, field survey methods,
and document analysis..., this article will describe important documents to get a better understanding of village society and pre-modern family structure in the areas surrounding Hue, thereby hopefully promoting the development of research on Vietnamese history through Han-Nom documents of villages
